《暗物质》的灵感和题材源自真实的故事进行改编的，故事的原型是在1991年当时发生了一起留学生卢刚拿枪将其导师杀害直接轰动国外内各大新闻。刘烨在影片中扮演的就是案件中的留学生卢刚，导师衣阿华大学副校长安·克莱瑞教授是由明星梅丽尔·斯特里普扮演的
安·克莱瑞属于衣阿华大学里面数一数二的知名权威教授，其父还去过中国进行传教，她出生于上海市，对留学生疼爱有加。在1991年万圣节时候，卢刚刚获得物理博士学位，但将三个教授一个留学生以及安·克莱瑞击杀，而后自杀。
当时的卢刚特别自负，想拿到诺贝尔奖学金，但自己也不会处事，没有拿到，最终心生不满就痛下杀手。事情发生后的第三天在11月4号时候，安·克莱瑞的兄弟捐钱成立心理学奖学金，促进学生身心健康，避免再次出现类似悲剧。
