本片改编自细田守的轻小说《怪物之子》。故事发生在怪物世界和人类世界，人类世界的主人公少年和怪物世界的怪物，他们本该在没有交集的世界里各自生活着。在某一天，少年痛失母亲，他不愿意接受亲戚的照顾，在大街上偶然遇到了怪物并成为了怪物的弟子，他们开始了一段冒险之旅。刚开始他们的性格差异比较大，冲突不断，在接下来的生活和修行中他们一起成长，不知不觉间走得越来越近，关系越来越亲密。慢慢的少年已经长大成了一个强壮的青年，在一次偶然的机会他回到了人类世界并和一个女高中生相遇，男主人公跟着女主人公学到了新的价值观，并开始探索着这个自己本应该生活的世界，就在此时，两个世界之间爆发了斗争，为了拯救众人他们三个做出了不同的决定.....
