该动画的整个故事都围绕着“灵主”这个概念展开。随着故事的推进，主角百里登风和燕凌姣回到了他们的故乡百里村。在这里，他们逐渐揭开了“灵主”的秘密。

在这个世界上，有两种人，一种为活人办事，另一种为死人完成任务。这些人被称为“灵徒”，而指引他们的逝者则是“灵主”。一旦成为灵徒，凡人的生命只剩下了为了完成未竟的遗愿而不得安息的一件事。

百里登风在这个世界上有着唯一的目标，那就是寻找失踪已久的妻子汝嫣。在寻找妻子的过程中，他结识了甲轩，一家被杀害且急于报仇的人，还有迷恋他的良又，神经兮兮的良垣。在一系列事件的推动下，他了解到了灵主和灵徒的存在，还接触到了一个致力于消灭他们的神秘组织“御灵团”。通过不断破解谜案，登风逐渐接近真相，但也发现了一些他不愿看到的真相。
