《漫长的告别》讲述一名日本的老人患上阿尔兹海默症以后，家里人如何照料他，以及每个人怎样克服各自生活困难的故事。电影通过平淡的对白和故事情节，将每个人身上发生的事情娓娓道来，把小人物身上的闪光点体现了出来

故事发生在2007年秋天，母亲曜子给离家在外的女人人们打电话，让她们来参加父亲的70岁生日派对。当时的长女因为丈夫调职正居住美国，次女在超市工作，无暇分身。这种情况下的两人回到家里以后，却得知父亲曾经在半年前被诊断出患有阿尔兹海默症，2011年二女儿和道彦开始交往，但是二女儿看到道彦带着自己的前妻和女儿一起玩耍的时候，二女儿知晓自己的这一单恋情也结束。她深知自己的职业和恋爱生涯应该告一段落，回家照顾起了自己的父亲，某一天家人们利用装着GPS的手机找到老父亲时，发现父亲正在游乐园和一群不认识的孩子一起玩耍，这让她们回忆起了往事。
