杨之华（董洁 饰）是一个具有新思想追求女性独立的女人，与此同时也有这传统中国女人的隐忍和温柔。杨之华来到聚集进去青年的上海大学读社会学，再次结识了向警予。翟秋白时任上海大学的社会系教授，是一个冥王卓著的老师，更是一个有血有肉的青年革命者，杨之华在翟秋白的课中感受到了他的忧国之情，并在越来越深的交往中被翟秋白的学识和人格魅力折服。杨之华的丈夫沈剑龙经常来上海探望她，但是两人的分歧却越来越大，杨之华感觉和丈夫越来越疏远

后来，杨之华在向警予的帮助下入党了，翟秋白的妻子也因为生病去世了，杨之华在父亲探望的时候提出离婚的打算。革命斗争逐渐严峻，杨之华还没有表翟秋白就被迫离职了，他配着杨之华回去见沈剑龙后，两人结为连理。虽然十年的婚姻生活彼此没有爱情的表白，但是确实人生中最美好的年华。
