故事主要围绕着邓伟祥（郭晋安饰）展开。他为了履行母亲的遗愿，从内地来到香港，希望能够投靠未来的继父凌醒波（秦煌饰）。然而，他未能找到波，却先后找到了表叔邓镜尘（马国明饰）投靠。尘是一个聪明能干的经纪人，每天忙忙碌碌，生活无着。机缘巧合下，尘从一则寻人广告中得知祥的未来继父竟然是富商波。尘为了帮助祥，不惜向雷贵利借了一大笔钱，并教导祥假装富家子弟，一同前去见未来继父。然而，他们却被波的妻子林兰卿（卢宛茵饰）当作骗子赶了出去。祥误以为自己被卿嫌弃贫穷，受到自尊心的伤害，愤然离去。雷贵利上门追债，祥决定为尘还债，这让尘深感感动。于是，两位表兄弟开始同捞同煲，共同谋生。

祥的室友是郑碧云（胡杏儿饰）和她的弟弟郑小龙（林泳东饰）。云曾在波的花露水厂工作，但由于厂长有私人恩怨，借口辞退了云。云别无选择，只能去舞厅当女侍应。与此同时，祥的未婚妻凌凤（江芷妮饰）因为不满父母的安排而离家出走。奶妈黎雯娣（夏萍饰）安排凤在板间房里临时居住，与祥等人成为室友。凤对祥产生了好感，而尘也被凤的青春美丽所吸引。祥把典当的信物交给尘，用以应急还债。偶然的机会下，他们遇到了波，波认出了信物，误以为尘就是未来的女婿。于是，卿契仔谢君绵（黎耀祥饰）提议让狄丽娜（黄泆潼饰）扮演凤，以应付并试探尘。尘被娜的美色所吸引。
