电影《走着瞧》讲述了一个七十年代市知青马杰的爱情和他与两头驴之间的斗争故事。这部由李大为执导，文章、岳红、白静联袂主演的爱情喜剧片改编自获奖小说《双驴记》。

马杰来到西北某农村插队，被村里漂亮的种驴——黑六的叫声吸引。马杰喜欢黑六，但黑六不让他骑，于是马杰偷了麻醉剂打给黑六，黑六因此生病，队长大莲以为黑六要死了，心急如焚。奇迹般的是，马杰“治愈”了黑六，赢得大莲和队里的信任，成为牲口饲养员。他一边喂驴，一边偷偷和村里的女青年彩凤相恋。

马杰对黑六只配种不干活的特殊待遇愈发不满，并对大莲“驴比人值钱”的论调暗自气愤，发泄中竟打坏了黑六的“命根子”。无法配种也不能干活的黑六被马杰宰杀，却没曾想黑六的弟弟，毛驴黑七，从此与马杰不共戴天。人与驴的斗争愈演愈烈。

该片通过一段简单的爱情故事，反映了当时插队知青的生活状况，展现了农村人与动物之间的关系。情节轻松有趣，同时也让观众对人与动物的关系有了更深入的思考。此外，文章、岳红、白静等实力派演员的精湛演技也为该片增色不少。
